Hiking is one of the most fun things that you can do. You get to be out in nature, and you also get to exercise. Besides this, hiking is really relaxing for a lot of people. What isn’t fun or relaxing, though, is getting caught in a hiking emergency without the proper medical supplies. Since you don’t want to carry a ton of stuff with you when you hike, it’s impossible to be prepared for every single situation, but it’s possible to prepare yourself for many situations by carrying the proper medical supplies.
One way to be sure that you have all you need is to make a small first aid kit that will fit in your hiking daypack or larger backpack. Start by making a list of the supplies you’ll need. Think about the obvious things like bandages, of course, but don’t forget things like anti-itch creams, allergy medication in case you have an unexpected reaction, and moleskin patches in case your shoes start to give you blisters.
The best way to store all these supplies will depend on what type of pack you tend to carry when you hike. The smallest possible first aid kit may be one of the roll-up kind. Find a small bag with several compartments that rolls up into a tight bundle. You can also use a large ziploc bag filled with smaller ziploc bags, though this won’t last as long, or you could even use a small box that will settle at the bottom of your hiking pack.
Don’t forget to make a checklist of the supplies you have in your medical supply kit. You may not have time to sort through the kit every time you hike, but you can at least scan through your list to see if you’re missing any necessities.
